The garment: A tan soft textured dress made of cotton, polyester & spandex. The dress has faux snakeskin ribbon trim at the collar and arm openings. The care label reads, “Machine Wash Cold Delicate-Tumble Dry Low-Warm Iron.” There are no International Cleanability Code care symbols.
The problem: Many cleaners are opting to dryclean this dress because the texture resembles a soft wool blend and the urethane trim appears like real leather. However, after any professional drycleaning there is a great risk of the bonding agent used to adhere the urethane synthetic snakeskin film to the base fabric partially dissolving, thus resulting in some of the urethane surface film on the trim to peel away.
Who’s responsible? Do not dryclean this particular fashion. The care process listed on the care label must be considered the recommended method of care. Any mishap that occurs from any alternative care is attributable to that process.
What to do: There is no acceptable method of restoration. If such damage appears after drycleaning then it is due to the improper cleaning procedure not safe for the trim on this dress.
