Nail polish stains can be challenging to remove. Nail polish contains a plastic base and coloring matter. Plastic stains require the use of dryside stain removal agents and are one of the most time-consuming and potentially damaging stain removal procedures.
Allow ample time for stain removal and for testing fiber content. Work on the reverse side of the fabric when the fabric construction allows. The procedure for a plastic stain is: (1) volatile dry solvent, (2) oily-type paint remover, (3) amyl acetate. Repeat these steps as needed. If the stain still remains, continue by using acetone and then volatile dry solvent.
Acetate and acetate-blend fabrics will be permanently damaged by acetone, so test the fabric before using this stain removal agent. Test all lining materials for fiber content.
Place a drop of oily-type paint remover directly on top of the amyl acetate or acetone. Blot off as much of the stain as possible. Allow the agents to soak in and break up the stain. Flush with volatile dry solvent. The stain removal brush or spatula may be used to gently work the stain removal agents into the fabric.
